How can we use probability and percent to create engaging board games?
  • Learning Goal C 3.1: I can show percents that are: between 0% and 1%, greater than 100%, and percents that involve fractions
  • Learning Goal A 2.1: I can show creative thinking
  • Learning Goal A 3.1: I can work cooperatively and collaboratively with a team
Lesson Plan:
  1. Review the roles in your Team:
    1. Leader
    2. Materials Manager and Reporter
    3. Recorder
  2. Board Game Planning Continued:
    1. On Your Own on a whiteboard answer the following questions:
      1. What are the events in your game that involve probability and how will they be involved in game play?
      2. How will you involve cards in game play?
      3. How will you involve Math questions in game play?
      4. How could you set up the board to creatively incorporate all these ideas.
    2. As a group share your thoughts from the questions above and write down everyone's ideas. Once you've written down everyone's ideas see if you can come to consensus on any of them or create even better ideas together by combining what members have already said (we will continue working on these next day)
      1. your recorder will make notes and/ or draw a sketch on the big paper (there are 11" by 17" sheets under the blue organizer on the tall table if you need more)
      2. your materials manager will keep the big paper and get ready to share ideas with the class next day
      3. your leader will make sure everyone contributes to the discussion and help keep the team on task
  3. Explore 4.1 page 122
    1. Hand out Hundred Grids

      1. Your recorder will makes notes
      2. Your reporter will get ready to share with the class
      3. Your leader will again make sure everyone contributes and help keep the team on task
    4. Get ready to share with the class
      1. 2 volunteers will be chosen at random for each question
        1. 1 and 4 can be discussed together
      2. First volunteer will share their ideas
      3. Second volunteer will comment on the first teams ideas and share their own
      4. First volunteer will then comment on the second teams ideas
